Private Thomas Todd

Thomas Todd was born on 23 March 1881 at Church Street, Coleraine, County Londonderry, the second of six children of grocer Daniel Todd and his wife Eliza Ann (née Mogey). His mother died when he was just five years old, his father re-marrying two years later. By 1905 Thomas was living at 11 Springmount Street, Belfast, and working as a grocer. On 21 August that year he married Mina McCallum at St Michael's Church of Ireland Parish Church, Belfast. The couple had five children over the next eight years. By the time of the 1911 Census they were living in Glenfarne Street, Belfast, Thomas working as a confectioner.

Todd enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 25 August 1914 (No.1031). Some time later, however, he fell ill and was found to be suffering from bronchitis. On 7 July 1915 he was discharged, being 'no longer physically fit for war service' (paragraph 392 (xvi), King's Regulations).

As the illness was contracted while he was serving, Todd was granted a pension.
